Born into a military family (my father was an officer in the Medical Corp), my sisters and I lived in Texas, Utah and Germany before settling in Royal Oak, then St Clair Shores, Michigan in 1957. After graduating from Notre Dame High School and completing Pre-Med at Wayne State University (WSU) in three years, I attended WSU, School of Medicine. During my Psychiatric Residency Training at Beth Israel Medical Center, my wife and I enjoyed the diverse interests of Manhattan. There, the proximity of world renowned Psychiatrists and Psychoanalysts enriched my formal and informal psychiatric education. I had begun a didactic (five days per week) psychoanalysis and completed this experience with Dr. Max Gardner (past president and senior Training Analyst of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute) which considerably widened my awareness of the human condition.
In 1988, I moved to the Chicago area to enjoy again being near a cosmopolitan area similar to NYC. During the 1990's I put resources and creativity into developing a novel computerized medical record venture. I received patents, developed a working prototype and acquired knowledge about funding a new business and seeking venture capital. These were years of 100-hour work weeks. After facing the fact that not every good effort is successful, my goal returned to seeking a routine practice and time enough for SCUBA diving and single-engine aircraft flying. After a quieter life in Eastern Tennessee (1997-2002), the need arose to be near family in the Grosse Pointe area. Renewing decades long friendships and even taking up new endeavors continues. In 2002, taking up drumming, despite minimal musicality, has not diminished by one whit my pursuing the touch to make the beat sound good.
